The sacred site of Amphiareion - dating back to the 4th century B.C. - was dedicated to the prophet Amphiaros. According to Greek mythology, he was saved by Zeus when he fought in the doom expedition, (which he foresaw) Seven against Thebes. Traces of the Amphiareum were found southwest of Skala Oropou. Today the idyllic surroundings (in a ravine with pine trees) contain a series of thirty inscribed statue bases from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The remains of a portico were found behind them, which was probably the area of the encometerion, where sick people slept in wait for the god to reveal their cure in their dreams. Amphiareion is located 48 km (30 miles) from Athens.
